Breaking It Down with The Guru

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the top 3 QB prospect of this draft broken down by our new contributor The Guru:

1a. Joe Burrow 6’4″ 215 lbs

Pro Comp: Tom Brady but can RUN. At least more than TB12. And probably catch a trick play in the Super Bowl too….just saying….

Pros: High grade field vision and decision making, very competitive, accurate passer, leadership and confidence, sneaky elusiveness/pocket presence, makes the throws that are jaw dropping, hits WR’s in stride, NFL ready.

Cons: Arm strength, small hands (seriously, like they are the hands of a carnival worker– looking at you Mahomes), needs to slide more to prevent injuries in the NFL, speed WR’s on LSU may have made his numbers inflated and can be deceiving, mechanics can be improved some with his footwork but, how can you really knock someone who threw a 73% completion??

Every one loves Joe Burrow. Period. He has the mentality and intangibles to be a HOF QB and that’s saying a lot.  But, like every QB, it depends on team schemes, coaching, and players around you. If he doesn’t turn into Tom Brady, I can see a Matthew Stafford comp being closer to what he could be just based off which team he plays for in just terms of possible production.

1b. Tua Tagovailoa 6’1″ 218 lbs

Pro Comp: Russell Wilson if legs work/ Drew Brees if not

Pros: High level pocket presence, high level of accuracy, can make the NFL throws, reads defenses pre and post snap, has touch with his throws, leader on and off the field, NFL ready pending injury.

Cons: Injury ridden legs, lacks arm strength, could have either elevated stats from players around him or he elevated the talent around him, wasn’t asked to do much because of Alabama’s run game and huge leads most games, hitch in his mechanics, needs to work on ball security and eye manipulation for NFL game.

TANK FOR TUA!!! Who ever drafts this guy has to hire Mr. Miyagi so he can make sure Tua stays on the field because his injuries to his legs scare me along with any NFL team looking for a QB. That wouldn’t stop me from taking him in the first round. It’s boom or bust for any NFL team but wouldn’t you take him regardless if he’s completely healthy? What’s the worst that could happen? He doesn’t play right away and sits a few years? Tua can definitely be a franchise QB to me at least, I mean that’s what everyone thought right? Now that seems to be in the past and everyone is looking at the new Corvette, Joe Burrow.  He can be considered 1a/b however you want to look at it.  This opinion might not be favorable to most but, he could change a team overnight, fingers crossed.  He has all the intangibles to be a great QB and will be a steal for a team that takes a chance on him.

3. Justin Herbert 6’6″ 235 lbs

Pro Comp: Josh Allen-literally could be his long lost twin brother.

Pros: Cannon for an arm, can make the deep throws look easy, athletic and mobile enough to avoid sacks and get easy first downs, has NFL size/body, can make throws from multiple arm angles, can run RPO’s in NFL with ease.

Cons: Needs to have finesse and touch with his throws, can struggle with passing accuracy/consistency at times, has to show he’s ready to step up in big games, tuck and runs instead of taking the chance downfield, locks on to one target and runs if not open, only ran offense from shotgun, needs to work on reading plays especially blitzes,

One of the strongest arms since well, Josh Allen. Herbert can make all the throws and his ability to be cautious may burn him in the NFL. Herbert isn’t a QB that can come in and make his team win games in the NFL right away. Needs to sit a few years to learn the playbook in its fullest so he can have the confidence to make those big time throws consistently. Running the Oregon playbook can be good and bad. They only run plays out of the gun where as in the NFL, they run from under center. I believe that Herbert is the biggest boom or bust of the QB’s in the draft because if the work is put in, he could be scary good like say a Ben Rothlisberger.
