CPL action was back in full force Sunday evening with 5 matches lined up to help celebrate our nation’s birth. Even the insane heat from the weekend could not match the action on the court and more guests arrived to take in the entertainment. With young fans throwing poppers and water balloons throughout the evening, true determination and focus was needed by all teams. Here’s how it all played out:
Match 1: Brown’s vs Sullivan’s
The evening festivities kicked off with a riveting match featuring the Brown’s and the Slammin’ Sullivan’s. Game1 featured a bit of defense in the beginning with scoring being tough to come by as the teams felt one another out. Despite some vicious slams by the Sullivan’s, the Brown’s cruised to a Game 1 win 11-3. After switching sides, the scoring became tighter with some impressive long volleys and skill shots by both sides. In the end, it was Team Brown that would take Game 2 11-8 to win the first match of the evening.
Match 2: Donaldson’s vs Streicher’s
Some schedule flexibility was required to move some games around to help support our local first responder which led to the Donaldson’s taking on the Streicher’s. Team Donaldson was looking to keep their undefeated streak alive and came out hot scoring the first 6 points of the game. After that, it was all team Streicher, powered by Jordan showing off his ambidextrous skill shots and Jill showing off her patented between the legs, splits shot (Seriously, ESPN is missing out!). Team Streicher would go on to score 22 of the next 24 points despite numerous efforts by the Twins to interrupt the momentum. By winning Games 1 & 2 11-6 and 11-2 in dominating fashion Team Streicher is making a statement with the tournament just 3 weeks away that they want a piece of that trophy.
Match 3: Zimmerman’s vs Schmidt’s
Our third match of the evening featured the two teams in a virtual tie for 5th in league standings coming into the evening. Both games wound up being very close in a back and forth tilt where scoring was at a premium. The Zimmerman’s were able to hold on to take Game 1, 11-7. Game 2 was shaping up to be just as intense when an emergency call required our local hero, Damon, to be called out. In to save the day was league guest Curtis Weisenburger trying to help out his sister and brother in law with a win. Unfortunately for the Schmidt’s, Rob and Lisa had their magic cooking and went on to take the game 11-8 to win the match.
Match 4: Van Ham’s vs Horstman’s
Fresh off of a bye week, Team Horstman came back with Allison S filling in for the expecting Dawn to take on the Van Ham’s who agreed to pull double duty this week. Neil spent his time in Florida studying the ample courts available and his work must have paid off as Team Horstman would storm out to a 11-4 win in Game 1. Game 2 would be more of the same as Team Horstman refused to lose again, picking up their first win of the year.
Match 5: Van Ham’s vs Wagner’s
In the second half of the Van Ham double header, the Wagner’s were on tap in a highly energetic bout. Both team came out hitting the ball hard back and forth during some highly competitive volleys. Justin and Sarah were able to jump out to a lead in both games early, then hold on winning both games by a score of 11-6 to earn the win.
Some schedule adjustments are in the works for Week 7 so check back later this evening for the updated schedules!
