Exploring A Novel Fantasy League: The Guillotine

We all have our favorites, right? I mean we have a favorite restaurant and our favorite item at that favorite restaurant. Fantasy leagues are like that too. We all love fantasy (or else you wouldn’t be reading the ramblings of a madman right?). And within fantasy we all have our favorite leagues. Season long head to head, Dynasty, Daily, heck, even Primetime only fantasy to be played. While perusing the buffet table that is fantasy football an interesting new concept growing rapidly caught my eye. Guillotine Leagues.

The concept is simple. Just don’t be last! Week 1, the league starts with 17 members and each week, the lowest scoring team is eliminated and their rosters is dispersed into the waiver wire. A true to the victor goes the spoils concept that has many in the fantasy community abuzz. Last year, league like this were very hard to find on the internet and most were done with poorly designed websites (don’t judge) or the old fashioned by hand route by fantasy nerds like us. Not any longer! GuillotineLeagues.com was created to be the premier destination for these leagues. So, after bypassing the filet I opted to try it out in a 17 person league with a slow draft style and 6 hour time limit on picks.

The entry fee was $15 with the last man standing winning a total of $215. The scoring is very similar to any other PPR league with the exception of no Defense or Kickers are rostered. Starting lineups will consist of QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, and Non-QB Flex. All pretty standard right? Now for the game changers. No trading at all in the guillotine league. The only way to improve rosters is through the Blind FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget). You get $1000 in “Space Bucks” to use in free agency for the year starting in week 1. As stated earlier, a new crop of available players is available from the eliminated roster each week, creating a conundrum of when to use your space bucks to improve your roster knowing the same guy could be available again in a couple weeks, while balancing the need to not finish in last in any given week.

The “Auglaize Owls” have been created to dive into the mystery of the league. After 17 teams joined a random draft order was drawn with the Owls slotting into Pick 14 of the online draft. Stay tuned for draft updates and recap of each selection and join our Journey with the Owls throughout a hopefully successful Guillotine cherry breaker.
